Static vs Dynamic QR Codes: What Can You Change After Printing?
A static URL QR code stores a fixed web address. A dynamic QR service usually stores a redirect address whose destination can be changed through the service. Both printed patterns stay fixed. What changes with a dynamic service is the redirect configuration, not the squares on the paper.
The important distinction is changing an encoded address versus updating the content at that address. You can update a page you control without replacing a static code that already points to it.
Static and dynamic codes compared
| Question | Static URL code | Dynamic URL service |
|---|---|---|
| What does it contain? | The address you encode. | Usually a service-managed redirect address. |
| Can the encoded pattern be edited? | No, not on an existing print. | No; the redirect destination is edited instead. |
| Can the webpage content change? | Yes, if you control the page. | Yes, subject to access to the destination and service. |
| Are scan analytics included? | Not inherently. Destination analytics are separate. | Often available, depending on provider and plan. |
| What must stay available? | The encoded address and destination. | The redirect service and destination. |
| Is a subscription required? | Not by the QR format; hosting may still cost money. | Provider-dependent; check the service terms. |
Can I update a menu without reprinting a static code?
Yes, if the code points to a stable menu page that you control. For example, you can revise prices and dishes on the same webpage while keeping its address unchanged. The static code still opens that address. This is different from replacing the encoded address with a completely different one.
If you use a cloud file link, deleting the file and uploading a new file may produce a different address. Do not assume a replacement file preserves the old link. Test the original address after each update, or use a stable webpage that links to the current file.
When is a static code a reasonable choice?
A direct static code is useful when you already have a stable address and do not need a QR-provider dashboard. It avoids dependence on an extra redirect provider. It does not eliminate your responsibility to maintain the destination, domain and access permissions.
Our QR generator makes this type of code. It does not offer dynamic editing or scan statistics. Enter the intended full address, inspect the displayed destination, and scan the downloaded image before distribution.
What if a static code points to a redirect you own?
You can encode a stable URL on your own domain and configure your website to redirect it elsewhere. Updating that redirect changes where visitors land without changing the printed code. The encoded URL remains fixed; you are maintaining the redirection yourself. toolai QR does not provide that hosting or redirect-management feature.
When might a dynamic service be useful?
A dynamic service can be useful when campaigns need to switch between different destination addresses after materials are printed, or when a team wants the provider’s scan reporting. Before committing to a service, check its subscription rules, what happens when a plan ends, whether links can be exported and what data it collects. Do not assume every provider has identical policies.
Commercial provider QR Code Generator describes its dynamic URL product as editable and trackable after printing. That is evidence about its service, not a universal guarantee for all QR providers.
Does either type expire?
The image itself does not contain a universal expiry timer. A direct link may fail when a page is removed or a domain expires. A dynamic service may also stop resolving links under its service or subscription rules. For either type, test the live destination periodically rather than relying on a never-expires marketing claim.
Before you choose
- Decide whether you need to change the address or just the page’s contents.
- Use a destination you can maintain for the lifetime of the print.
- Check service terms rather than assuming free means permanent hosting.
- Scan a real downloaded or printed copy, not just the on-screen preview.
